So, my week ‘off’ has been a success.  I’ve thoroughly enjoyed not writing or editing, but I think it’s time to get back to a manuscript.  Honestly, it feels like something is missing in my day. I have a relatively clear schedule next week to get started, and a novel that’s in need of moving to a final draft. In other news, Dubai is back!  I received the most amount of invitations since March, and I’m booked through the end of the month. This week saw me visiting Claw BBQ with the Bookers (come for the margaritas, stay for the people watching and overheard loo conversations), a trip to Tresind to see Chef Himanshu and Helen in conjunction with Dubai Summer Surprises (thanks to the team for sending me home with some treats for Hubs), and back to BOCA to try some upcoming dishes for the menu (the mushroom risotto is insanely…

I finished!  Yesterday I turned in a new draft of a 70K manuscript. This comes after writing another 70K, editing an additional 80K book, and publishing a novella.  My life has pretty much been non-stop writing since March.  Guess what?  I’m going to take a few days off! We went to Radisson RED with Poppy last night and were generally disappointed (not in our dog, of course, she was amazing).  The hotel seems to suffer from not really knowing who it wants to cater to, the food was nearly inedible, and the property needs to do more with helping those who have pets. I’m not in a hurry to return, and it’s 2020, can Dubai be done with ‘those seats are reserved/we’re fully booked’ with zero tables occupied approach? Links, please? Always sign me up for more food shows.  (Eater) Do you use Instagram as a place for information? A similar read here, in case…

My thoughts go out to Beirut.  Here are some suggestions on how you can help. With the explosion in Lebanon, the tragedy puts perspective on things, and I hope you’ll take this week’s newsletter as a short few minutes to enjoy reading about food and hospitality. This week was steady, starting with delivery from Ugly Burger (v. good, but not good enough to knock off favorites Pickl and High Joint), then I went with friends to La Cantine du Faubourg (my first time that I enjoyed the restaurant, after years of average visits).  I also went to a local restaurant and, after a nearly inedible meal, ended up giving a lot more feedback than I expected (I sincerely hope they take my notes as the constructive criticism it was intended).  On Tuesday afternoon, I was over to long time favorite BOCA as part of the Dubai Summer Surprises in partnership with Dubai 103.8 for a masterclass.…

Steady as she goes.  I’m editing an old YA book, while waiting for a major copywriting job to take off.  I had a busy week of deliveries including Dan’s Home Food (for those in need of pasties and pies, although we liked the fish and chips best), Chef Middle East (I have 3 kilos of seafood in the freezer, send me your paella recipes), Shake Shack (rather than build my own, honestly, I would rather just order one already made), and my favorites, Carnistore (we stock up every three weeks or so for our weekend steak fest).  I also went out with the book club to Asil, the newest restaurant at Rixos JBR. What to do with a nut surplus? Need to try soon, air fryer smores. Extra time to listen? Best food podcasts. We like Splendid Table and Cherry Bombe. The saddest outdoor dining experience? Which weirdly makes me…

Honestly, where did this week go?  This was probably the most active I’ve been outside of the house since March.  I finally visited The Maine (those chandeliers!), revisited LahLah (a brilliant ladies night, AED119), and tried the new season at Tresind Studio (just go, you’ll love it – check out my buddy Eat Go See’s comprehensive review).  I also had my first inedible/un-postable food sent to me (!), but fortunately also enjoyed Go! Greek, who were nice enough to send us lunch on Thursday.  Something must be in the water, because I’m expecting a lot of deliveries next week (no complaints). Interesting discussion of gender in the kitchen. Hotels, treat your workers like you treat your guests. What IS the difference between over easy and sunny side up eggs? You’ll want to watch this take on how (not) to cook rice. The (exciting) return of Dunkaroos. What I imagine it…

A perfectly steady week (with late nights that I probably could’ve done without, but they felt good towards getting back to normal).  I made it out to BB (with a brief drop in to see my boys at BOCA) and over to a last-minute invite at Ossiano. I (mostly) made progress on my book, and Poppy is very much becoming comfortable with us. In case you wondered, the cake meme from the past week, explained. An interesting look at some of the results of modern food media. Will seltzer hydrate you as well as water? I’ve been really into this Instagram account, exposing influencer pay gaps. Three meals in one sandwich. If you make a booking at a restaurant, don’t be an asshole and no show. I was back on the radio. The third season of CSR of One launched this week.  I would love for you to listen and…

A week where things started to pick up, believe it or not.  So close to finishing my book (!), the new season of CSR of One starts next week, I went out for dinner (twice!), and generally just had a healthy week all around. Love letters to restaurants. Baby Yoda breakfast cereal is finally here. The difference between prawns and shrimp (my American self still wonders why prawn is so dominant here). Ketchup ice cream?  #hardpass Would you wear a necklace that tracked your eating? It’s now illegal to throw away food scraps in Vermont. Stuff to buy for your kitchen (a thread). Misfit Market – ‘ugly’ produce gets a new life. I really enjoyed this thread on influencers in Dubai (and hope their perceived ‘power’ is greatly reduced in the coming months). We’re trying to find safe spaces for Poppy to meet other pups in our life, so she…

A relatively busy and productive week, with a hair cut and color (for the first time since March 10th), and some yummy treats delivered (thank you, Roberto’s and Home Bakery). Would eat ramen pizza? In the whimsical category, here is some food jewelry. But does food actually unite us? The true devastation of not having shredded cheese on your fajita. What’s in Prince’s refrigerator? A wild read. Rewriting the history of American food (and including the contributions of Black Americans). A good read, Non-Appetit. Sad, but true – in the food industry, the odds have always been against Black people. Why is almost all food writing in English? If you’re looking to help local restaurants, please look at this endeavor from Frying Pan Adventures (they are finished with current funding on July 6th). If you want to learn a little more about things, I did an interview for CSR of…

A steady week including upping my word count (hitting 50K!), meeting a new (and crazy talented) friend, an actual food review (well done to Hanami), and getting some seriously generous food deliveries (thanks to Reach My Kitchen, 3 Fils, and The Broth Lab for keeping us well fed). Some links? Our lives happen in restaurants (might be behind a paywall). Influencers…on gas stoves? You had me at Ja Rule and gyros. At the corner of food and fiction. Love these street view portraits. NGL, this was and has been my biggest concern for travel going forward. Spoiler alert, I don’t see this getting better any time soon. The future of restaurants post-corona virus. You had me at tipsy sorbet. Is this the end of tourism? (Is that a bad thing?) Why do we dine out?  I had some thoughts. This weekend we’re having one chill out day, which will mostly…
