Jebel Jais Flight: The world’s longest zipline.
Even after 11 years in Dubai, there are a few experiences we haven’t ticked off the list — SkyDive Dubai, a night in the Burj Al Arab, and until recently, the world’s longest zipline, located in Ras Al Khaimah. When a friend announced on Facebook that she was coordinating a group to go to Jebel Jais, I thought, ‘Sounds fun!’ Thus, on a hot afternoon in June, we made the 2+ hour drive to Ras Al Khaimah from Dubai. From my experience, here are a few things to consider: You will get lost. The instructions that accompany your booking request you arrive an hour early. THEY ARE CORRECT. As someone who prides herself as being punctual, between Google Maps errors, missed turns, detours, and a total lack of signage, it is REALLY in your best interest to show up earlier than you think. Rain Room Sharjah: Worth the visit?
Recently, The National announced the opening of the permanent installation, The Rain Room. This immersive exhibit, launched in 2012 was created by Random International, and seen all over the world, has found its permanent home in, of all places, Sharjah. My curiosity completely piqued, I decided to take advantage of easier traffic patterns during Ramadan, and convinced Hubs we were in need of some culture last Saturday morning. Having had at least one friend who attempted to visit earlier (and wasn’t able to), I realized it was in our best interest to buy tickets in advance (and I’m very glad we did). Fortunately, when I logged on the evening before, there were still 3 tickets available for my preferred timing. Tickets are a very reasonable AED25 per person (students are AED15). Intercontinental Fujairah: A property without an identity.
The great thing about having a husband who’s into diving (even if you personally tried and failed epically) is that you get to visit a lot of beach destinations. In this instance, with Hubs on his way to becoming a Dive Master, he is in need of some additional certifications and hours in the water. He usually goes out with Al Boom Marine, who tender from Fujairah and tends to drive up and back on the same day. However, with my interest in the recently opened Intercontinental Fujairah, it was easy to say yes to a staycation instead. Oberoi Al Zorah: A modern coastal visit.
Although it may not sound that way, it’s actually been awhile since I’ve spent a night away from my villa. I’m not sure if it’s some form of nesting, or just that I’m wildly comfortable (and productive) with my current status quo, or that friends keep having amazing birthdays, but Hubs and I haven’t been away for a proper night in quite some time. Wanting to stay in the country, and ruling out Abu Dhabi, I debated the new Intercontinental in Fujairah, but in the end, the Oberoi Al Zorah won out. Fairmont Ajman: Unexpected luxury.
Even though I’m just back from what felt like a month of hotels that I still need to write about, sometimes we need a vacation from our holiday, do we not? In this instance, a quick getaway to nearby Ajman fit the bill. While I’ve now conquered visited most of the Fairmont properties in the UAE (Fujairah, SZR, and my favorite weekend visit Abu Dhabi), I had not yet visited the Ajman venue (and don’t worry, The Palm — I have plans for you). Waldorf Astoria, Ras Al Khaimah: Perfect staycation destination.
Having been to RAK on a few occasions (mostly to visit my favorite UAE property, Banyan Tree Al Wadi) I hadn’t yet had the opportunity to stop by the upscale resort neighbor, the Waldorf Astoria. Having been to the flagship Waldorf Astoria in New York many years ago as a Peabody Student Judge (go Dawgs!), I can say that as an American, just the name ‘Waldorf Astoria’ is instantly synonymous with luxury and sophistication (even if my brunch at the UAE sister Palm property was a bit of a disaster, as was my whelming experience at Social by Heinz Beck). Lexington Grill: A romantic venue in RAK.
What first attracted me to visit the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah was their current ‘Dine Around’ package, which promises three courses spread over three of their on-site restaurants (Lexington Grill, Umi, and Marjan…my inner foodie loves a diverse evening). My dining partner and I deviated a bit from the plan (enjoying two courses at Lexington Grill), but our first stop was at Umi (although to be fair, the evening actually started with drinks on the terrace at Camelia, also recommended). At Umi, which takes on a modern design with cool blacks, a literal wall of sake, along with traditional sushi and teppanyaki bars, we worked a bit with the menu and a bit ala carte (yes, being a food blogger does come with its privileges). Fairmont Fujairah: Chic coastal getaway.
My love for the Fairmont brand is a strong and steady infatuation, built on years of admiration. The Fairmont Bab Al Qasr in Abu Dhabi offers my favorite weekend package in the Emirates (which I’ve taken advantage of on numerous occasions) and the Fairmont on SZR is full of great memories (including Thanksgiving dinner 2009, a quick stay with visiting girlfriends, and a fun Saturday brunch at Catch). I’ve made it to Fujairah a few times during my time in the region — always as a weekend staycation destination, a place to get away from the busy life in Dubai. There’s something special about driving through the dunes, then over the mountain to the sleepy emirate on the coast.
