The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort: Whale Bar. — A TO ZA’ATAR

The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort: Whale Bar.

The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort: Whale Bar.

And what’s a tropical getaway without a fabulous bar to sit and watch the sunset?  How about in the belly of an (architectural) whale shark?  While the majority of design in Maldives properties focuses on tropical beach/beach chic/sophisticated beach vibes, I liked this modern turn as a memorable location to enjoy a sundowner (or two) at the St. Regis Maldives Vommuli resort.  Unique in the daylight and truly stunning at sunset, the Whale Bar is a great venue to grab a drink before dinner.  There is an extensive cocktail list (presented on iPads), and if you’re lucky as we were, the St. Regis will honor one of their particularly grand traditions — the art of sabrage (a skill that yours truly is gifted with).  A glass of Roederer with the sunset?  Yes, please!

What’s best is that the interior of the building is just as stunning as the exterior.  The ceiling of the Whale Bar has a beautifully designed mural of sea life in the style of Maldivian pyrography, was curated by Sharan Apparao based on a concept from Wong Chiu Man of WOW Architects in collaboration with artist Maya Burman.  The soft lighting, high ceilings, and large, intricately pieces of carved wood make for a very unique location.  The atmosphere is further enhanced by the relaxed music broadcast at the perfect volume.  (PS, Gents who are looking for propose — look no further — this venue is fantastic).

If you’re hungry for nibbles, there is a cold and warm bites menu for snacking (just don’t ruin your dinner).  🙂  We were tempted into trying the Island Mary (pictured above), which is the St. Regis Maldives property’s version of the drink (St. Regis locations around the world each have their own variation).

Where’s your favorite place for a sundowner in the world?

A to Za’atar was a guest of the St. Regis Maldives Vommuli resort.  Opinions are my own, just ask my husband.
