A busy couple of weeks – hope you’ve been well!  Here’s a few bits and bobs from around the web. An interesting discussion about how we photograph ethnic food (and why it matters). What does NatGeo have to say against travel influencers? When did influencing begin?  Earlier than you might think. How happy would I be if Instagram started hiding likes? (The most happy). An interesting ‘day in the life’ of chef Nina Compton. The art of (filming) food. I started a podcast!  (It’s completely unrelated to food). I was named a foodie influencer by Time Out Dubai. We’re off to try some new Mexican at Puerto 99 this weekend, and generally catching up on our lives (as we haven’t been adulting much at all this week). What are you up to this weekend?

A busy week – and one you’ll be hearing all about in the next post.  Anyway, I’m officially 39.  Go me. How not to put together a press trip. The women of champagne (and one of the main reasons I love Veuve so much). This restaurant is like every restaurant, or is it? Do you like airplane food?  I admit I’m sometimes weirdly nostalgic about it. What to do when your fave restaurant serves bad food. Is pizza the best food to serve at meetings? Spent last night in Abu Dhabi checking out a new restaurant a hidden bar, among other things.  Tonight brings us back to Carnival by Tresind, and tomorrow – hopefully, spin class.  Next week, I’m bringing Keto back in a big way. What are you up to this weekend?

Hello hello!  My week was basically stress city trying to get my visa sorted (before I travel to the States next week).  In between my minor meltdowns, I was able to check out the new WG Magazine coffee book (literally) launch at the new W the Palm, and we had a successful book club at Il Faro (decent deal for a ladies night, if you’re looking for one with food). How do you make a viral recipe? Why did this best selling cookbook get overlooked?  (Spoiler alert, people are snobs). Pursuant to many of my interests (meals from novels). Gummy bear art, because, why not? Village Bakery is offering up some good discounts, I like the sushi making kit or a Miyabi knife (which I’ve heard great things about). In which a global dining award is still not as inclusive as it could be. My latest for Dubai Eye. This…

Another week of moving forward — I think sometimes it’s by increments that don’t mean a lot, but there was progress this week.  Also, I got to check out the London Project, and tonight am going to a collaboration dinner between two of my Dubai-based faves, chefs Reif and Roberto at Waka. What’s it like to be a bartender in Antarctica? Google and their dominance of local discovery. Why do you think I contribute so regularly? Love this combo of ‘Friday food fiction’ prompts. Let’s talk about stew. Some tips on how to start a food business. Diversity in food critics.  Yes. This weekend is mostly chill city, with the potential of going out for Indian.  Next week will be a bit hectic, with a trip to Abu Dhabi and another collaboration dinner at BOCA on Tuesday. What are you up to this weekend?

I was on track to get things done this week (mostly writing related), and then I got the flu.  I had to cancel on a dinner reservation, which I absolutely hate doing.  Oh well, I don’t have time to be sick next week — too much happening! I do tend towards the personal in some of my reviews and am a little late to the party, but loved this take from the Slate about why online recipes involve a full personal story before getting to the actual food… The New York Times Travel doesn’t get it right. My latest on Dubai Eye. How Instagram is ruining destinations. Can’t wait to do this in the next city we visit! One of the highlights this week was tasting Penfold’s Grange. We celebrated a friend’s 40th this weekend at one of my favorite venues for Friday brunch, Fire Lake Grill.  I’ve been three times…

As I told Hubs earlier, this was a week where I moved the chains.  Not by much, but things are getting done.  I finally got out from under whatever fog I’ve been in and pitched a few places and events, which felt very good.  I also went to Neos for the first time (after wanting to visit for nearly the entirety of our time here) and checked out Tanuki at Dubai Mall for some original sushi rolls. How (are) food influencers changing the industry. Related to ‘influencers,’ this story is a WILD ride. (I’ve never disliked someone more.). Want to be a better food photographer?  Some good tips. How to be a better food blogger. Some great food festivals to attend. If you’re in the F&B industry, is it okay to have a side hustle? We had a wonderfully lazy day yesterday and checked out Seafood Kitchen at the Pointe on…

A week with a bit of this and that.  Although I won’t be writing about Mix by Alain Ducasse (mainly because it was not an experience I can say nice things about, AED420 for pasta, why?).  Fortunately, the company (my new book club) was lovely.  The following night was spent at Oak Room, at the Edition Abu Dhabi, which was simply wonderful.  There will definitely be a review forthcoming, and if you live in AUH, I would encourage you to book a meal there soon. Menu art in New York. My latest for Dubai Eye. Unrelated to food, but I’m speaking on a panel at the Emirates Airlines Festival of Literature.  I’d love to see you there! Best classic cocktails from literature. Poop emoji ice cream, because that’s the world we’re living in. Some good tips on growing a website. I’m a bit in the weeds at the moment about 15…

A quick week, but thankfully a productive one!  I’m so close to finishing a draft of a book (still MILES to go – but being on page 176 of 217 is a good feeling).  I’ve also been getting out and about – some pitches, some reviews, and it’s all feeling good.  In the meantime, we’re having a lot of fun looking after our little foster dog, Phoebe, and enjoying the beautiful Dubai December weather — it’s fantastic! I should probably look a little more into this. Like museums?  Like food?  Have I got a list for you. Yes, it’s perfectly okay to cook normal food. Overbooked versus overlooked — some good destinations in here. Using dating apps to find the best food? 11 foods that tried to kill you this year. What are you up to next week?  Any exciting plans for Christmas?

We finished up the last of our holiday parties this weekend, and have started fostering a lovely little dachshund, Phoebe.  She’s got a lot of energy, so I’ve seen my step count go from roughly 5K a day to almost always over 10K.  Given we’ve been getting to know her, I’ve been keeping reviews to a minimum.  In all honesty, it’s been the best kind of JOMO!  I’m going to make up for my quieter week last week soon, so stay tuned for some new locations. The most useful tips from culinary school. Getting excited about…an egg salad sandwich? When a home cook outshines a foodie at home. Someone make me these (now). More about diversity in travel writing. Lost recipes of Christmas. ICYMI, my latest trip to the studios at Dubai Eye! What were you up to this weekend?
