Having friends in the travel business makes planning a holiday quite easy. In the instance of flying to Cape Town to see some friends (and take advantage of a fantastic Qatar Airways deal, never mind the money stolen off the DWB – DOH portion of the flight, more on that later…), I reached out to a friend who is an expert in arranging travel on the African continent (and is South African herself) and asked, “Where would you stay, if you were in Cape Town?” She gave me a list of three properties. The Siam: Modern luxury in BKK.
While I certainly don’t mind a chain hotel (the Four Seasons Sayan is still my overall favorite property in the world), I think there’s also a time and place for a smaller, more intimate experience. While our stay at the W was lovely (those beds!), when we transferred to The Siam at the end of our trip, I knew we were going to enter another level of service and luxury. Although we weren’t explicitly greeted on arrival (!), a walk through the lush interior courtyard and warm welcome at reception with cold, scented towels, homemade passion fruit juice, and the manager, Nick, I only wished my stay was going to be longer than two nights. W Bangkok: Most comfortable beds in the world.
The W brand has a special place in my heart. On a cool night in January at the W Doha, the idea for Room 702 came to me (of course, that was because I couldn’t sleep because we were placed over a DJ spinning nothing but bass, but if that’s what it takes to get an idea for a novel, I won’t complain). Thus, while there are an absolute ton of hotel options in Bangkok, I’m glad the decision to stay at the W Bangkok was more or less made for us (my travel partner was attending meetings and the awards ceremony in conjunction with the World’s Top 50 Restaurants Asia). The standard room is relatively spacious and includes some of the most unequivocally comfortable beds I’ve ever slept in (and I’ve been sleeping in quite a few recently). Waldorf Astoria, Ras Al Khaimah: Perfect staycation destination.
Having been to RAK on a few occasions (mostly to visit my favorite UAE property, Banyan Tree Al Wadi) I hadn’t yet had the opportunity to stop by the upscale resort neighbor, the Waldorf Astoria. Having been to the flagship Waldorf Astoria in New York many years ago as a Peabody Student Judge (go Dawgs!), I can say that as an American, just the name ‘Waldorf Astoria’ is instantly synonymous with luxury and sophistication (even if my brunch at the UAE sister Palm property was a bit of a disaster, as was my whelming experience at Social by Heinz Beck). My love for the Fairmont brand is a strong and steady infatuation, built on years of admiration. The Fairmont Bab Al Qasr in Abu Dhabi offers my favorite weekend package in the Emirates (which I’ve taken advantage of on numerous occasions) and the Fairmont on SZR is full of great memories (including Thanksgiving dinner 2009, a quick stay with visiting girlfriends, and a fun Saturday brunch at Catch). Park Rotana Abu Dhabi: Modern, clean, and relaxing.
As spread out as I feel Abu Dhabi is, I’ve tended to focus my attention on venues located on the main island, near the corniche, Saadiyat Island, or Yas Island. Always wanting to expand my experience, I was happy to accept an invitation to stay at the Park Rotana Abu Dhabi and review not only Teatro, but also the property in general. The Middle East is no stranger to a nice hotel room, and ten years in, I have high standards about my expectations when a new property comes along. While I certainly love luxury and well-known brands, more than anything, I like a quiet, modern room (while you might think this is easy, in practice, I believe it’s actually quite difficult). Dear Shangri-La Qaryat Al Beri, I remember when you just opened — a sparkling jewel in Abu Dhabi — when you were the most exciting venue in the capital and a destination to look forward to. Unfortunately, the years have not been kind. My stay earlier in the summer yielded a horrifically humid (moist – ewww!) room, a visit further marred by the ongoing and incessant noise of jet skis and then non-stop thumping bass of the music at Pearls & Caviar. With the nearby Fairmont such a lovely property, I took to TripAdvisor to make others aware of the differences (and my preference) between the two luxury properties. Villa Markisa: Secluded Diving Oasis.
With a three-hour drive from Denpasar Airport, the tiny driveway to Villa Markisa sneaks up quite quickly in the quieter northeast section of Bali. With plenty of staff on hand, our bags were quickly whisked to rooms (either in the main house or the free standing bungalows). As there is no main lobby or reception area, the process of checking in took place quite informally. The resort is not overlarge (just 6 rooms, for a total of 12 guests), but home to all kinds of wildlife and tropical foliage. The main house is made up of two levels, with a small shop area, library, and living room, with a large covered deck which overlooks the onsite pool and beautifully maintained gardens.
