Best of the Month Archives — A TO ZA’ATAR

Tag Archives: Best of the Month

Not going to lie, February was a month full of (mostly good) food.  There were some disappointments, but overall, I was very good at picking restaurants. A rather difficult decision, but my favorite dishes were the following: Corn achappam, 65 spice, Tresind Studio, Season 3. Crispy eggplant, Indochine. Wok tossed Beef Tenderloin, Hutong. While I loved the entire new season at Tresind and picking just one dish was difficult, the first course of act two was my favorite ‘new’ dish of the group.  Also, the Bod Bod pop up burger at High Joint deserves an honorable mention. Next month is my birthday (!), and we’ll be staying in Dubai for the month.  There’s nothing officially on the cards, but February held a lot of surprises, and I’m hoping March will too! What was your favorite dish in February?

Given the absolutely frenetic pace of November, I was far happier in December — which started with a long weekend.  I did my best to pace out visits this month, and for the most part, succeeded.  I’d be happy if every month in 2020 was like this one. In no particular order, let’s close out the year, shall we? Breakfast at Reif Kushiyaki.  I really don’t want to narrow my choices down, since I loved everything we had. Charred octopus, Aya. Cucumber salad, Streetery. I’m going to do my best to pace myself in January, which I think should be a fairly steady month.  We’ve got a trip booked to Oman, we’re moving (!), and I’m trying to get down to a mystical 60kg by March, so I think it will be quieter than other months. And how about you?  Were there any winning dishes you tried this month?

October came and went in a flurry of events and good food.  Most of my best dishes this month were off the menu or for special events, but that’s my life now?  #humblebrag Wagyu tartare, Tasca Tomato tartare, 3bk Quinoa and egg, Rare Very honorable mention to the new tasting menu at Mint Leaf of London. November has the potential to be my best foodie month – I’ve got some stars lined up in California, and a trip (?!) to France. Where did you eat this month?  Anywhere good?  Are you looking forward to any meals next month?

Here and there and everywhere this month, but honestly, not that many memorable meals (or, at least not as many as I was expecting, given the range of places I visited).  I think it’s okay to be disappointed, but I was a bit shocked at just how much average food I had this month.  Hopefully, October has better offers! Japanese Ohmi Wagyu A5 Tataki, Eat Me. Beef gyoza, Reif Japanese Kushiyaki. Sea urchin pasta, Alici. (So glad to see this establishment has held up!) Where did you eat this month?  Anywhere good?  Are you looking forward to any meals next month?

Wowzers, June was a loooooong month.  Having visited two countries in between a few meals in town, an outstanding Macallan event, and attending Eat DXB, there was a lot of food! So, what was the most memorable? The Toast, Crown Jewel. Assorted dips and Tandoor bread, Phoenix Social Club. Sourdough Pasta, Tasting Counter. July looks to be nearly as busy as June, with a trip to Ireland in the mix.  I’m also serious about the gym, and looking forward to knocking off some kilos. What did you eat this month?  Anything good?

Given that Ramadan took up most of the month, and I was on a Keto diet for a week, there weren’t a ton of opportunities for me to dine out.  You know what?  That was completely okay!  Not every month has to be a whirlwind of food.  I didn’t mind a few house parties, or just staying in.  Here’s what I do remember enjoying: Foie gras crumble, Seagrill Bistro. Wagyu filet, Verve Bistro and Brasserie. Guacamole, Puerto 99. Next month looks to be a bit more exciting, and that’s fine too.  With trips to Boston and Zanzibar in June, I’m excited for a few meals on the horizon. What was your favorite dish this month?

Is it just me, or did April certainly come and go in a hurry?  I had a mostly well balanced month with lots of highs.  In no particular order: Sashimi, Tori No Su.  Give me all that fatty tuna, yo!! Porterhouse, Chicago Meatpackers.  Sometimes, a steak just hits the spot! Hamachi, Oni.  One of the most delicate bites I’ve had this year. I’m still not sure what May looks like yet!  I might be in Dubai for the entirety of the month, but I might go to Bangkok. Did you try anything good this month?  Any recommendations in town I should go to try?

March certainly kept me busy.  Even with a cold mid-month, there was still plenty going on.  Overall, I feel very good about my balance this month, and will endeavor to do more of the same in April.  This means, sticking to my diet (more than anything), and holding to one night out (only) during the week.  Of course, I’m going to start the month on vacation, so, basically, the challenge continues. Without further adieu, my most memorable dishes for March 2019. St. Christopher cheese course, Bacchanalia. Butter Chicken souffle, Four Hands dinner with Tresind Studio. Capesante Scottate, Alici. Very honorable mentions to the cauliflower dish at A Capella (review forthcoming), and the dry aged beef at Lowe (and really, a lot of Lowe’s menu).  Also, Pumpkin Kofta, Carnival by Tresind, and the pasta at the aforementioned Alici.  I really was quite spoiled this month! April should be nearly as steady as…

If I’m honest, February came in went in a flurry of mainly average and some disappointing outings.  Add into this book club, radio visits, getting a very stubborn visa renewed, having to fly home to the States and more events than I originally intended and February came and went before I realized the month had even happened. In no particular order: Beef tenderloin, four hands dinner with Chef Reif and Roberto at Waka. Tale of the Oyster, collaboration dinner, Chef Tala and Matijas at BOCA. Scallops in the half shell, Akira Back (review forthcoming). March will start out strong, as I’m finally getting to visit one of the top restaurants in Atlanta, which has been on my list for literally ten years.  It’s also my birthday, among many other activities — I’m looking forward to it! What was your favorite dish this month?
