fine dining Abu Dhabi Archives — A TO ZA’ATAR

It’s been awhile since I’ve dined at Bord Eau.  If memory serves, the last time I was there was with an Entertainer coupon for a buy one get one offer for the Hubs and myself.  Fast forward three years and I was happy to host a dear friend for a meal at this intimate French bistro.  Both of us recalled dining at the venue, but our memories were neither good or bad (not a particularly good sign for a restaurant).  Located at the Shangri-La Qaryat al Beri (of which I’ve had my issues…), the restaurant is set directly off the usually bustling lobby.  Once inside, the noise disappears, and visitors are left with stunning views of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque.  Tables are spread quite far apart, such that there is privacy (unless the sound is turned off and then it’s awkward for everyone). For our visit, although I had initially been interested…

I got a bit of a sneak preview of JW Steakhouse when I filmed a recent episode of What’s Cooking UAE earlier in the year (you can see the whole thing here, should you be interested).  At that time, I met Chef Stephan, one of the more dedicated and enthusiastic chefs in the country.  He showed me a brief preview of the Chef’s Menu, which had me thoroughly impressed (and I hadn’t even had a bite!).  Although I intended to return in September, life got in the way, so for early November, I was happy to be invited back to the restaurant.  For those who have not visited previously, JW Steakhouse is the premium dining outlet at the Marriott Downtown Abu Dhabi, located on the first floor of the hotel.  While the primary focus of the venue is, of course, steak, I jumped at the chance to review one of…

Certain properties come with specific expectations, don’t they?  With Chef Richard Sandoval behind a brand that is already well established in the region, including restaurants in both Doha and Dubai, I was excited to visit the recently opened Toro Toro in Abu Dhabi (as the Abu Dhabi branch lacks a website, I’ll link to the Dubai venue, just for reference).  Having missed the epic launch party the week before (many a hangover was witnessed on my Instagram feed the following day), my guest and I traipsed awkwardly through the pool deck area of Etihad Towers to reach the entrance (O signage, where art thou?).  Apparently, there is an additional route by the Aston Martin showroom that we both missed, and I would encourage you to find the correct approach, rather than dodge wet towels and sun loungers.   On arrival, we are greeted by two giant white bulls…and a number of…

It should come as no surprise that this venue has come highly recommended to me for ages. Almost every person who’s visited Abu Dhabi has asked me, “But have you been to Catch?”  Well, now, I am delighted to say I have finally joined the ranks.  Far different than the restaurant of the same moniker in Dubai, the interior of this Catch is all sophistication and nautical themes Perhaps the giant screen of fish in the lounge is a bit much, but I’ll allow it, for the sake of ‘atmosphere.’  Much like nearby neighbor Asia de Cuba, the layout of Catch lends itself to a leisurely drink at the bar, a more formal dining experience within the restaurant, or al fresco seating (when it’s not 1 million degrees out).  With an open plan, as well as a sushi counter, there is virtually always something interesting to look at within the restaurant.…

Emirates Palace has been knocking it out of the park recently!  After my last (delicious) trip to meet Chef Hendrik Yde Andersen for lunch, I was more than happy to return and taste some of the dishes from Chef Norbert Niederkofler, the patron of the two Michelin star St. Hubertus restaurant (located at the Rosa Alpina Hotel in South Tyrol, Italy).  Like Chef Andersen, Chef Niederkofler was generous enough to sit down for a few minutes and discuss his career and culinary passions with me. We talked mainly about his ‘Cook the Mountain‘ approach to food and fine dining.  I have to admit that I am jealous of all the local sourcing he has access to and also impressed at all the future planning involved in scheduling a menu for the entire year, including planting and culling proteins.  I also learned about his inspiring Care’s initiative, The Ethical Chef (which I would encourage…

Confession time.  I cannot remember a time when I specifically have eaten or ordered caviar.  Full disclosure?  As of yesterday morning, I was not confident on how exactly it should be eaten.  I know, you can take my foodie card away and revoke my privileges.  Of course, I believed blinis, along with some other special condiments, were involved with the consumption of caviar, but that’s about where my knowledge ended. Enter, AmStur Caviar. First and foremost, caviar is a product, like champagne, that to me is immediately synonymous with luxury.  It is in a category of food you only see on the menus of elite restaurants, or an item presented to first class passengers.  Yesterday, at Emirates Palace, as Mr. Nick Narsavidze began to explain the different types of caviar, I didn’t realize how excited one person could be about the many details of caviar (and its consumption).  With an enthusiasm that…

Welcoming guest blogger, The New Glitterati, to the team!  The fact I was invited to this dinner (and instead went to Social) makes me super sad — it clearly would have been worth the trip.  And a warning, do not read while hungry!! Overview Abu Dhabi is not particularly known for its Italian food, and it’s certainly not a go-to for us. Circo is tucked down in the InterContinental next to the Belgian Cafe and the first thing we saw, aside from the well-executed circus-themed decor, was the gleaming “Time Out Abu Dhabi – Best Italian, 2015” plaque proudly placed by the entrance. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a legit Italian meal and we were excited to try something new and see what the ‘Dhabs had on offer. Plaques notwithstanding, Circo has a lot to live up to. The child restaurant of New York’s famous Le Cirque, beloved by…
