Having visited Friends Avenue earlier in the year, I was very excited to see what offers were available at sister property Arrows and Sparrows.  Winding my way through the Greens (the scene of cherished days from many years past), I parked in the adjacent parking lot (make sure you keep your ticket to get validated before leaving) and walked to the shady side of a business building (outdoor seating available in this lovely weather). The menu at Arrows and Sparrows, like many a cafe, is not reinventing the wheel, but instead offers a few creative takes on the classics.  For example, while I tend to find a full English breakfast a bit heavy, I found the ‘local’ inspired breakfast (a DEAL at AED42, including a filling combination of sourdough toast, poached eggs, hummus, salad, tapenade, salad, minced lamb and halloumi) to be exactly what I was looking for.  Meanwhile, across the…

For those not in the know, JLT (that’s Jumeirah Lakes Towers) has a host of non-chain restaurants.  Due to its free zone capacity, there are venues here that don’t exist anywhere else in Dubai (and are all the better for it!).  One of those places is Friends Avenue Cafe, a charming little spot that everyone in JLT inevitably already knows about.  Needing to collect a car (Hubs works in nearby Tower X), we left early enough to secure a parking spot in one of the tiny areas in Cluster T.  No fault of the cafe, but as a tangent, the parking situation in JLT is what stops me from visiting more often — I can’t stand the system (or waiting)! Living on the ‘other’ side of town, I still somehow often find myself on Al Wasl or Beach Road for appointments at least once a week.  Today was no different, so after finishing up, I plugged in One Cafe by Life N’One (which, my apologies to the owners, sounds like a fancy yoghurt) to trusty Dr. Google and six minutes later arrived at my destination.  Firstly, if ‘curb appeal’ counts for anything, you will immediately be put off.  The cafe/yoga/pilates studio is fronted by a busy parking lot (I chose street parking down the way).  Inside, you will know you are in the right place by the number of life-affirming mottos on placards and windchimes.  While the immediate steps lead into the studio space (which, should you be interested, offers an extensive list of courses), the back garden has been transformed into a cafe of sorts.
