Sushi Park, an omakase experience.

When looking for a suitable lunch spot in Los Angeles, I knew I wanted something like a tasting menu (if possible), and as close as possible to where I was staying.  After researching many (many!!!) lists, I stumbled on Sushi Park.  Sushi for one is a challenging endeavor (as exciting as some of the other restaurants looked, there was no way I would be able to eat more than two sushi rolls and a few pieces of sashimi), making omakase the perfect option.  As a restaurant that touts itself as authentic (there is a sign on the door which says, ‘no California rolls’ among other routine sushi dishes that they do not provide), Sushi Park is not a place to go for a Dragon roll or dynamite shrimp.  Essentially, there is one menu, and that is the chef’s choice.  

Located in a very nondescript strip mall off of Sunset Boulevard, Sushi Park isn’t going to win any interior design awards.  Fine by me.  When it comes to fresh sushi, I’m most interested in the taste and range of fish.   With a team of three sushi chefs behind the counter, the ‘courses’ are seamless.  After determining if I have any allergies, the fish start coming at a leisurely pace.  I’m sat at the sushi bar with easy access to the chefs, who continually supply me with different perfectly cut pieces of sushi.  As a solo diner, it was the perfect fit for a meal.  With close to twenty ‘courses,’ I walked out quite happy and very full.  And honestly, I don’t think I’ve had this level of fish in 2019.

Michelin officially lists this property with The Plate, which didn’t really factor into my planning, but I agree with their determination.

The cost for the omakase at Sushi Park was the only thing that would make me pause from recommending a visit to everyone.  While there is no doubt Los Angeles is an expensive city to dine in, the cost of USD$182 (inclusive of omakase and a small bottle of San Pellegrino), does seem a bit high.  I’m not going to question that the elements of the meal are definitely expensive, but…  And for any UAE readers, we’re lucky – Hoseki is much closer, and provides a similar level of omakase.

Would I go back to Sushi Park?  Yes, but only for a special occasion.

Who is Sushi Park best for?  Sushi purists.
