It should come as no surprise that this venue has come highly recommended to me for ages. Almost every person who’s visited Abu Dhabi has asked me, “But have you been to Catch?”  Well, now, I am delighted to say I have finally joined the ranks.  Far different than the restaurant of the same moniker in Dubai, the interior of this Catch is all sophistication and nautical themes Perhaps the giant screen of fish in the lounge is a bit much, but I’ll allow it, for the sake of ‘atmosphere.’  Much like nearby neighbor Asia de Cuba, the layout of Catch lends itself to a leisurely drink at the bar, a more formal dining experience within the restaurant, or al fresco seating (when it’s not 1 million degrees out).  With an open plan, as well as a sushi counter, there is virtually always something interesting to look at within the restaurant.…

Spoiler alert, I’ve lived in the UAE for ten years, and while I’ve driven through Al Ain a few times, I’ve never actually stayed overnight.  As Hubs did quite a bit of work in the city circa 2009 (including the wildlife park), I was happy to accept an invitation to revisit this slower paced desert city.  A relatively quick and easy 1:20-minute drive from Dubai, other than the lack of signage to actually get into the hotel (you’ll need to detour around the stadium), the exterior of the Aloft Al Ain matches the interior — modern and low-key.  The lobby is an expansive, open plan space, complete with a pool table, entrance to the W XYZ bar, and a grab and go deli counter (the Emirates need more of these, TBH). Emirates Palace has been knocking it out of the park recently!  After my last (delicious) trip to meet Chef Hendrik Yde Andersen for lunch, I was more than happy to return and taste some of the dishes from Chef Norbert Niederkofler, the patron of the two Michelin star St. Hubertus restaurant (located at the Rosa Alpina Hotel in South Tyrol, Italy).  Like Chef Andersen, Chef Niederkofler was generous enough to sit down for a few minutes and discuss his career and culinary passions with me. As spread out as I feel Abu Dhabi is, I’ve tended to focus my attention on venues located on the main island, near the corniche, Saadiyat Island, or Yas Island.  Always wanting to expand my experience, I was happy to accept an invitation to stay at the Park Rotana Abu Dhabi and review not only Teatro, but also the property in general. I’ll be honest, I went into this review expecting a dated property.  I hate to judge a book by its cover (especially since I’m an author), but imagine how surprised I was to walk into a sleek lobby with tons of natural light, modern flower arrangements, and a stately color palate. Long time readers will know that when I lived in Abu Dhabi, I was an island snob.  I was also overworked and a bit of a shut-in, so I limited almost all my dining to Saadiyat (with occasional trips to the main island and Yas).  Thus, I missed out on some great opportunities in the capital!  Case in point, Teatro.  I’ve lived in the region long enough to have visited a number of Rotana properties, but never knew Teatro was considered the signature restaurant of the brand.  So, with an invitation to the Park Rotana (which I’ll review in a separate post), it was easy to say yes. When I’m not reviewing food, I’m often writing — usually novels — but also about hotels (and very rarely, novels about hotels).  In this instance, I was out at Zaya Nurai Island for some freelance coverage and was invited to dine at the newly opened Hooked with my host.  With such a lovely setting, how could I refuse? Located directly up the arrival dock is Hooked, a Mediterranean restaurant with an Arabic twist (‘coastal influences of the Levant’ as per the website).  The venue is a unique spot in Abu Dhabi (as are most of the restaurants on the island, because how often are you going to dine on a private resort island?).  With a smaller interior and an expansive chicly designed exterior, this is an ideal place to enjoy a meal al fresco. The Middle East is no stranger to a nice hotel room, and ten years in, I have high standards about my expectations when a new property comes along.  While I certainly love luxury and well-known brands, more than anything, I like a quiet, modern room (while you might think this is easy, in practice, I believe it’s actually quite difficult).  Thus, when I had an opportunity to stay at the Bab Al Qasr in December, I was happy to accept the invitation. Do you have a restaurant somewhere in the world that always provides a memorable night and good food?  For me, that place is Cho Gao at the Crowne Plaza in Abu Dhabi.  When I recently saw the launch of the Taste of Japan menu, I contacted the hotel to see if I could come in a review (as it had been awhile since my last visit).  To my delight, they agreed.
