Lots to explore in Dubai this time of year, right? A recent Saturday night found us at the newly launched Mama Zonia. I’m going to admit, that my visits to Pier 7 have significantly dropped off, mostly because of (what else?) traffic to and from the location. I never had a chance to visit Cacti (the former version of Mama Zonia), so, really, I have nothing to compare the venue to (except the other restaurants I’ve visited located in Pier 7). Upon arrival, the interior is done in lush greens and bright jewel tones. There is a large bar/lounge area, which opens onto an exterior terrace (perfect for these temperate Dubai winter days). The interior is similar in style to Hotel Cartegena, and I imagine this will be a popular ladies night destination in a short amount of time.

After reviewing the extensive cocktails menu, I’m happy with my selection, the equal parts sweet and tart Mamatai, AED60, which is a play on one of my favorite rum-based drinks, a Mai Tai (I like it so much, I end up ordering two). The lads try a few different things, and we also receive the made for sipping and behemoth of a drink, the Piranha Bowl, AED199 (serves four people). The bar staff are clearly talented, and take our notes in stride (for whatever it’s worth, the Gardenia Blue is simply a terrible taste for all of us, even if it’s a popular item among other patrons).

Spoiler alert, we were served a TON of food, so I’m going to concentrate on the dishes that had the most impact or were the most unique. I would encourage you to review the menu before visiting — there’s really something for everyone. We jump straight into cold starters, with Hubs decides we need to try the Sea Bass Ceviche, AED60. Unlike a recent underseasoned dish with the same fish at another restaurant, Mama Zonia delivers all that I want in ceviche – a bit of heat, sourness, and some texture. We’re also brought the most creative dish of the evening, a serving of the vegetarian Watermelon (sliced thinly to mimic tuna sashimi), AED48. Even with some elevated ingredients and larger serving size, I’m not quite sure something with watermelon as a base deserves a nearly AED50 price point. Vegetarians might also be happy to see some maki rolls designed with them in mind, and all diners should be satisfied with the range of choices (sushi, ceviche, poke bowls, salad).

We move on to hot starters and try a few skewers, and even though the Wagyu, AED85 is a bit salty for our tastes, I’d most likely still order it again. The Tiger Prawns, AED65 while nice, are just on the side of fishy that we all agree a bit of work needs to be done. Fortunately, our comments (as we’ve been giving feedback throughout the meal), is well received. The Frog Legs, AED165, is a signature at the restaurant, and unlike an inferior experience at Pierre’s in 2018, the protein is battered and seasoned perfectly. Although it’s still not a dish I would ever crave, the lads love it, and I have to admit that the ‘jungle curry’ it arrives with is a great pairing.

One can’t visit without trying Mama’s Prime Beef Short Ribs, AED210. Really, it’s the first dish we all noticed when perusing the menu and we’re not disappointed. The ribs are perfectly tender and are easily split among three people. We also order Giant Tiger prawns, AED310 (for two) which, as was the case of the recently visited Villamore, the price point is considerable (especially given the prawns are frozen and not fresh). I don’t mind the prawns, but much like the appetizer, they lack the fresh quality I prefer when ordering this protein.

Finally, although we try and beg off dessert, I’m delighted when our BBQ banana, AED45, arrives, as well as a cheesecake that is a small piece of heaven. If you can, do leave room for dessert.

Honestly, other than a few minor tweaks, there is not much I would change at Mama Zonia. We had a lovely evening, and like some of the other venues I’ve visited recently, the prices (inclusive of all fees) is a professional approach to dining out in Dubai. Furthermore, there were some decent vegetarian options on the menu, and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Overall, the venue caters to whatever kind of night you want to enjoy — a drink at the lounge with a few small bites or a more extended, more substantial meal with friends. Personally, I enjoy spaces that offer multiple experiences (while not infringing on other diners).

Would I go back to Mama Zonia? If I was in the Marina, of course! (My general aversion to the Marina is still firmly in place, but for Mama Zonia, I might make an exception).

Who is Mama Zonia best for? Those looking for something new at Pier 7. Honestly, they are my current favorite at Pier 7. A great ladies night.

A to Za’atar was a guest of Mama Zonia. Opinions are my own, just ask my husband.
