Matto is a place that arrived preloaded with a reputation of sorts. Thus far, trustworthy diners seem engaged with the servers, food, and overall ambiance of the restaurant (really, who doesn’t love a giant mural of a man kissing a fish?). Thus, when an invite to check out the lunch menu came across my desk, I was happy to accept. After all, who doesn’t love carbs?

In true Italian style, the business lunch (between 12:30 – 3:30 PM daily) offers something for everyone. While we sampled plates from across the menu, the current business menu provides a selection of specially priced antipasti (AED35) and mains (AED55), which allow you to create your own lunch. You can also order off the Main Menu, so basically, everyone wins. Also, the property is licensed, so even more so, this is a great spot to seek out (a glass of wine with pasta is necessary in my book). While the starters were nice enough (with traditional selections including bruschetta), my favorite dishes were the mains — the cheese filled Ravioli Ricotta & Spinacci, and the larger than life, meant for a table of four, homestyle portion of Melanzane & Burrata. Sign me up for freshly made pasta and cheese any day of the week, friends.

Although I’m not sure if the spiritual home of Matto is located in the Oberoi (maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see the connection between the two brands), I have no real improvements or suggestions for the team. Honestly, it was altogether refreshing to see what I would consider a normal take on service in Dubai. Would I return? Certainly. Nothing is being reinvented here, however, the charm of the staff and unique design of the space lend Matto to a fun option in Business Bay. I rarely crave Italian as a cuisine while dining out, but if I was, I would head back to the restaurant for an honest, rustic meal.

Where’s your favorite Italian restaurant in the city?
